Southern California has become a major internationally recognized center for graduate art programs with renowned faculty, a place to watch for new talent in the art world.

Following the success of last year’s first student-organized exhibition of Southern Californian M.F.A. graduate work, eight art schools from Southern California have again joined efforts to present Supersonic: L.A. Design Center.

Supersonic: L.A. Design Center, organized by students from eight Southern California graduate programs, presents the works of 130 graduate students from high caliber art programs of intellectual and artistic rigor featured together in one exceptional location. This exhibition is a remarkable opportunity for these M.F.A. graduates to share their work and dialogue with each other, as well as a larger Southern California community. Critical writings from PhD, M.A. and M.F.A. students from the eight participating graduate schools will be hosted through the Supersonic: L.A. Design Center web publication, supersonic2005.soccas.org. These writings discuss the artists’ work in relation to this exhibition and to larger art practices, creating a forum that further highlights the depth of work assembled together for this show.

“The turbo-charged collaboration among the major M.F.A. programs once again demonstrates that innovative concentrations of creative energies and forces can counter the proverbial sprawl of Southern California. This time, the massive organizing effort has truly been OF, BY and, as before, FOR the participating students whose abilities are clearly not limited to art-making and thinking but also to creating a viable community in process. This year, the partnership with a new venue, the L.A. Design Center, signals the exciting renaissance of the arts and culture in all parts of Los Angeles and a desire for new possibilities in the mix of a different locale with new art and new audiences,” remarked Yong Soon Min, UC Irvine, Supersonic faculty coordinator.

The L.A. Design Center, John Friedmann & Alice Kimm Architects’ newly renovated and ambitiously constructed ‘Warehouse Complex’ with its hard wood floors, exposed brick walls, and large windows, will serve as center stage for this year’s Supersonic exhibition.

One participating MFA student stated, "The great thing about this Supersonic is that it is student organized. As we all graduate from school there are nerves and expectations for our futures. By organizing a show together we turn that uncertainty into action, and that reminds us that we already are what we want to be.”

Participating M.F.A. programs include: Art Center College of Design, California Institute of the Arts, Claremont Graduate University, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Diego and USC.
